Increased fuel efficiency of light vehicles will not solve the problem that has bedeviled our nation for decades: the long-term hemorrhage of American jobs and capital to petroleum producers. If our light vehicle fleet is 100% dependent on petroleum-based fuels, reducing use of those fuels will neither save money nor reduce vulnerability to supply disruptions in the long run. As in any market controlled by a monopoly, the monopolist has the option to raise its prices as demand declines. The consumer cannot come out ahead by conservation alone. [read more]

That’s exactly what one of America’s most innovative companies is working on. energyNOW! correspondent Josh Zepps looked under the hood of a next generation battery design that uses nanotechnology to make EVs more powerful than ever. I remember my first trip to Bentonville, Arkansas to visit the WalMart corporate headquarters. As I looked at the offices of all the vendors who sell to WalMart, I remember thinking “being the world’s biggest retailer has its advantages.” So it is with the development of the electric car (EV). We root for companies like Tesla but, to move the market in a substantive way, you need to be big. [read more]

The great pitfall of government policies, no matter how well-intended they might be, is their inevitable unintended consequences.
