The Raging Grannies

Recent polling said 63 percent of Americans support renewable energy investment…in theory. But in practice, Not-In-My-Backyard (NIMBY) opposition to new energy infrastructure prevents about 45 percent of renewable energy proposals from being built across the country, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. NIMBY opposition to utility-scale renewable energy projects is well-known, like the Cape Wind offshore wind project in Massachusetts, which took nine years to obtain permits because of opposition from local residents. But what about small-scale renewables – does NIMBYism threaten them as well? [read more]

Not-In-My-Back-Yard!!!   This is perhaps one of the most natural of human reactions. Sludge plant? I might poop but don’t put that upwind of me. Oil Refinery? I’ll drive as much as I want but don’t let that cancer-causing behemoth ruin my view or threaten my kids’ health. A hospital in the neighborhood? Sure, save my life but... [read more]

Last week, President Obama shocked environmentalists by opening millions of acres of the American continental shelf to oil and gas drilling. The announcement reminded me of a backpacking trip I took to Malaysian Borneo several years ago. Stranded in the sweltering city of Kota Kinabalu with a day to kill, I wandered inside the state... Renewable energy technology by its very nature needs an abundance of the relevant natural resource to generate electricity, whether it be the sun, the wind or the tides. However it also needs to be close to a grid connection point so that the electricity can be distributed to where it is needed. Nimbyism occurs when people refuse to... [read more]

The UK Government’s ‘new’ idea to try and combat wind farm NIMBYISM is to get wind farm developers to give local communities cash, according to the Times this week. The reality is however that payments are already being offered to communities by wind energy companies on a voluntary basis. The introduction of a formal system of... [read more]

It is encouraging that our reaction to the current energy crisis has reached the stage at which we are beginning to see concrete plans for addressing it systematically, rather than via the grab-bag approach employed in last year's energy bill. The same applies to the related, but not quite parallel problem of climate change. But whether... [read more]
