It’s December again (how did that happen!?) and our annual time for reflection here at Kachan & Co. So as we close out 2011, let’s look towards what the new year may have in store for cleantech. There are eggshells across the sector for 2012. Global economic uncertainty in particular is leaving some skeptical about the chances for... [read more]

This post also ran on The Hill's Congress Blog in advance of comments I'll be making at this week's ACORE's National Policy Forum. There’s a chill in the air that hints at the stormy weather ahead for renewable energy. After several years of success, the political winds have shifted and the water has grown choppy. We’re entering an... [read more]

Looking past the possibility of any legally-binding global emission target (and U.S. involvement in any treaty), the international climate negotiations opening today in Durban, South Africa are missing the point – the only way the world is going to drastically reduce carbon emissions is through innovation. Money, money, money, money! Energy! That's not how the O Jays' song goes. But it may as well, and its my mental soundtrack whenever I engage in discussions of green finance. Financing and funding is a key holdup in renewable development, and indeed, in almost ever sustainability policy effort I can think of.What's frustrating is that it's... [read more]

How Not to Use EROEI

This week I will be at the 2011 ASPO-USA Conference. I will deliver one talk on technical due diligence and one on our new energy reality. I will also participate in a roundtable discussion on investing. On the talk on our new energy reality, I am going to have a slide on my general observations over the past few years. One of those observations is that the concept of Energy Return on Energy Invested — EROEI — is frequently misused. The most common example is when people simply dismiss a process because it has a low EROEI or a net negative energy return. So as I am finalizing my slides, I thought I would share my EROEI observations here. [read more]

The China Clock: Designing Urgency into Energy Storage Demonstration Projects

In short, we need to adopt the China clock. Smaller, more numerous, more diverse and more rapid demonstration projects are the key to developing DES technology and realizing the advantages it holds for the grid. Money for DES demonstration projects is good, and more money is better. But what is really needed is a sense of urgency. Time to completion must become a major focus for government-funded demonstration projects going forward. We must learn to push the time envelope and to push it consistently as a matter of practice, just as they do in China. [read more]

The global market for clean energy products grew to $243 billion in 2010, a year in which China and Germany both captured a greater share of this global investment than the United States. That has led many (myself included) to worry about the erosion of US competitiveness in a set of clean energy technology products--from solar and wind... [read more]

From this week’s RETECH conference and expo in Washington, DC, there seem few realistic aspirations for energy, clean tech and other entrepreneurs to protect their intellectual property if manufacturing in China or selling to Chinese markets.
