Jessee, I would not be so pessimistic about GIC. Yes, this natural phenomenon exists, and we now have a better understanding of it and how it impacts the grid. The challenge now is to make the necessary modifications to the system, its components and the operating procedures to minimize its effects. The grid has developed over many years, and we have been able to address other serious natural challenges such as lightning and natural disasters. While it may not be possible or practical to create a grid that is completely impervious to extreme GIC, we can certainly work to make it more reliable and reduce any possible outages so that your home generator does not get over worked.
