David Gold heads up cleantech investments for Access Venture Partners.
David Gold very graphically makes a fantastic point - efficiency will buy us a little time, and to a great extent it's very achievable. One way we can get there is to move away from internal combustion that yields 15 to 20% fuel-to-work energy, to the much greater efficiency of hybrids with electric drive and eventually off fossil-powered transport all together.
As the graphic David uses clearly shows, the biggest element of our energy use is fossil, the biggest use of fossil is petroleum, and the biggest use of petroleum is transportation. The tech for smarter transport is here now and we need to incentivize, urge, cajole, shove and whip our transportation infrastructure into the 21st century.
Here's more on the electric option that I personally favor:

Baby steps in this direction aren't going to cut it. We have less than 3% of the world's oil and - as China and India come up in demand - if we're still addicted, rehab in the form of a transition to renewables will be priced out of reach because we need that cheap dirty energy to build the clean system. We need to get moving now on efficiency AND renewables because BOTH will be needed.
