Yesterday was by far the hottest day of the year, with temperature in Toronto as high as 33 degrees C, and very humid. Electricity consumption was higher than normal, but nowhere near a record. The air conditioners were running, but it was the first hot day of the season, so the buildings started the morning very cool. How did wind do on this high demand day?
It turns out, wind did very well. Heat often blows into Ontario from the US. The Ferndale wind farm had its biggest day of the month, producing 54,000 kWh, for a capacity factor of 44%. Ravenswood produced 135,000 kWh, also its biggest day of the month so far, for a capacity factor of 57%.
It isn’t always windy when its hot, but it often is, especially at the start of the heat wave. And wind matches the load very well when the hot winds blow into the province.
