Siemens and Russian grid operator Federal Grid Company (FGC) have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to upgrade power grids in Russia.

As per the agreement, new Siemens technologies such as low-loss high-voltage DC transmission or smart grids will be implemented on FGC objects. Furthermore, production of electro technical Siemens' equipment in Russia and service and reconstruction of installed Siemens equipment on power facilities of FGC are part of the agreement.

Udo Niehage, CEO of power transmission division at Siemens Energy, said: "The planned modernization of the Russian power grid will raise the good relationship we have enjoyed with the grid operator FGC over many years to a new level."

Siemens said that the companies want to work together to optimize efficiency-enhancing technologies for the Russian power grid and ensure that they are then put to use. An additional goal is the expansion of local production facilities for modern systems and equipment such as power transformers, high-voltage switching devices and medium-voltage switchgear.

FGC, which owns approximately 118,000km Russian long-distance power grid, has unveiled plans to invest EUR12bn from 2010 to 2012 in its development.
