How to Leverage Data to Increase Clean Tech Sales
In last month’s post “How to Grow Electric Vehicle Sales”, I discussed the importance of understanding your target customers so you can successfully market your new clean tech product or service. For instance, the people who brought the early Toyota Prius - typically middle aged, upper middle class, highly educated, environmentalists –... [read more]
Hold On for the Plug-in Prius
Electric vehicle sales disappointed their manufacturers in 2011, but don’t get discouraged about this technology just yet. [read more]
Predicting the Electric Vehicle Adoption Curve
Guest post by By Craig Shields, Editor, 2GreenEnergy.com As I told the audience in my recent presentation at the Electric Vehicle Summit, I actually see this subject as one of very few bright spots happening in the world today. In particular, it appears that the divorce between Big Auto and Big Oil will be a messy and ugly affair, but... [read more]
I Just Got Taken for a (Quiet) Ride!
If someone says, “electric car” to you, what image pops into your head? For most folks I have spoken to, images like the tiny Smart Car or a two-door roadster usually come to mind first. But yesterday at the first day of Plug In 2011 that image changed in my mind when I saw first-hand that the electric car has grown up and grown bigger.... [read more]
Nissan Leaf Tries to Jolt Sales vs. Chevy Volt with TV Ad
Nissan Leaf is losing ground to its hybrid competitor the Chevy Volt. In fact, some report that Volt has been kicking Leaf's butt -- or at least blowing Leafs off of the lawn? So Nissan has decided to take on Volt the old-fashioned way: with a TV spot that CNET featured this morning and that will air on June 12 during the NBA Finals.... [read more]
Debate: Are More EVs in Our Future?
energyNOW! anchor Thalia Assuras talks with Jeremy Anwyl , CEO of car rating website Edmunds.com and Mary Beth Stanek, Director of Environment and Energy at General Motors to debate if electric plug-in and alternative fuel vehicles could replace internal combustion engines. [read more]
PEV Sales: Don't Panic...Yet
We must recognize that the skeptics are to some extent right. A few thousand PEV’s will make little difference to American energy security or to the environment. Vehicle electrification only makes sense if it includes a significant portion of the national automotive fleet. PEV’s must be made attractive to mainstream consumers if our massive national investment in them is to be justified. [read more]
Report: 3.8 Million Electric Cars On The Road By 2016
As the first mass-market electric cars start to, slowly, hit the streets, the big question is whether battery-powered vehicles are the future or a fad. The answer won’t be known for years but a new report from GTM Research offers some interesting insights into where the electric road might lead. The report, “The Networked EV: The... [read more]
Charge it! The Challenge Facing Electric Cars
With all the dismal environmental news of late–from the nuclear crisis in Japan to the Republican attacks on EPA in Congress–it will be a pleasure this week to turn my attention to one of the most exciting developments on the sustainability front: the arrival of electric cars in the U.S. To be sure, the sales figures so far for the... Power sharing: App connects EV drivers, outlet owners
First there was music sharing and then car sharing. Now get ready for plug sharing. Xatori, a Silicon Valley software start-up, aims to create a network of electric car enthusiasts who make their household power outlets and home chargers available for drivers who need to top off their battery or who find themselves out of range of the... 100% Renewables in my Lifetime
Very recently WWF released a new report which argues the case for a near 100% renewable energy system by 2050 as a solution to the environmental issues and resource depletion associated with the current energy mix. This would also eliminate the need for a shift to nuclear and the use of CCS as potential means to reduce emissions. The report is supported by an analysis produced by Ecofys, a Dutch consultancy focusing on sustainable energy solutions. A paper along similar lines by researchers based at Stanford and the University of California, Davis looks at the feasibility of a renewable energy end-state, rather than tackling the timeline in which it could be implemented. A key focus of the paper is the grid interconnection required to support such an energy system. [read more]
The Electric Vehicle Hump: It’s the Batteries, Stupid
Highly recommended: Green Car Congress: GMs views on challenges for battery development for extended range electric vehicles. Go read it, then come back here for my musings. I’ve long said that the most important single engineering challenge in electrifying motor vehicles, and, by extension, in our ability to deal with peak oil, is... [read more]
Will an Electric Car Save You Money? The Green Skeptic on FOX Business
Earlier today I helped Stuart Varney on FOX Business answer a question from a viewer about the cost to charge an electric car versus a gasoline-powered engine. The bottom line is, electric vehicles will be cheaper than gas. Here is a video: Watch the latest video at video.foxbusiness.com If the viewer doesn't play in your... [read more]
Ari Peskoe: As Electric Vehicles Return, Will Federal Support Continue?
But with most of the Federal funding either expiring or running out, the incoming Congress will have important decisions to make about the near-term progress of EVs. [read more]
Top 10 Energy Stories of 2010: BP's Deepwater Horizon Fallout & Oil Prices Rise
Here are my choices for the Top 10 energy related stories of 2010. I can’t remember having such a difficult time squeezing this list down to 10 stories, because there were many important energy stories for 2010. It was hard to cut some of them from the Top 10; so hard that I almost did a Top 15. But I made some difficult choices, and... [read more]
