Solar Combined With Wind Power: A Way To Get Rid of Fossil Fuels?
Earlier, I wrote on how crucially an unreliable sources of power such as wind depend on fossil fuels. Based on real world production data from around the world, I noted that even with massively distributed production wind power is very variable and necessitates a reliable backup power source (typically from fossil fuels) which must be able to produce essentially all the power society consumes. A way around this problem would be a massive energy storage, but I found the size of the required storage to be unreasonably large. [read more]
No Coal, No Oil, No Nuclear. No Biomass?
This is [large-scale, industrial use of natural forests for energy] turning to ash sustainable job opportunities, threatening the greening of the forest sector and the value added product trend that has been emerging in recent years. And what is against of common understanding of biomass: Exploiting forests for energy increases carbon... [read more]

When Changing A Lightbulb Isn’t Enough…
What have you done lately about climate change? In the last two weeks, about 700 Americans – with more to come – have been arrested in front of the White House, calling on President Obama to block the construction of the $7 billion, 1700-mile Keystone pipeline project that will bring Canadian tar sands oil to largest... Was The IPCC Renewables Report Hijacked By Its Press Release?
Remember when the news was that the IPCC had announced that renewables could power the world by 2050? There has been a bizzaro controversy over this. Prominent voices from across the spectrum of opinion on climate science weighed in on the same side. A world class odd couple, Steve McIntyre and Mark Lynas, agreed... [read more]
A Critique of the 2011 IPCC Report on Renewable Energy
Below is a critical discussion of the recent IPCC Working Group 3 Report on Renewable Energy. It is being referred to as a report from many experts showing that the world can be running mostly on renewable by 2050. However I think it is a remarkably unsatisfactory document. Following are some of the main points I detail. [read more]
Heat, Public Health, And Air Conditioning
In the face of spreading heat waves, more and more people will need air conditioning, not as a matter of comfort, but for health related reasons. Efficiency will not supply the electricity for an air conditioned world. [read more]

My interview on Diane Rehm - Plus my 'debate' with Greenpeace on Senate climate bill
You can listen to the full Diane Rehm show here. This didn’t end up being a debate, and I think was pretty informative. Democracy Now! has posted a full transcript of what they bill as “Greenpeace v. Center for American Progress: A Debate on the Kerry-Lieberman Climate Bill.” I don’t really consider it a debate when the other... [read more]

“Cities will need to be retrofitted, as a whole. There's much work to be done. Vertical farming and other forms of energy/space/agriculture integration will be necessary to further sustain how humans live on this planet.”
“David,Reserves, potential resources and production are not interchangeable, and apocalyptic statements that depend on conflating them are thus fundamentally flawed. Your cogent analysis makes this crucial distinction well. It just needs a bigger audience.”
