I keep trying to think of ways to get Republicans concerned about climate change. I frequently push the idea that the GOP should support a carbon tax as a free market solution, in order to pull lefties away from “command and control” regulatory policies. The problem with this is that Republicans don’t care about free markets so much as they care about corporate welfare.

I think there’s promise in the religious community — caring for god’s creation and all of that. At the same time, Christianity is pretty socialistic, and that doesn’t seem to resonate with Republicans.

So perhaps the national security angle will do the trick. The military is absolutely getting the message.

The trouble here is that Republicans seem to enjoy the idea of lots of overseas military adventures, so the threat of new conflicts springing up around the globe might be tantalizing rather than disturbing to them.

This could work on libertarians, though. They truly do seem to detest overseas interventions, which will be unavoidable as the planet warms.
