How 3 Local Innovation Labs Are Helping Drive a Global Energy Transition

Last December, The Climate Group published three briefings revealing the findings from its Innovation Labs as part of the Energy Transition Platform, an initiative which supports state and regional governments to develop and implement innovative clean energy policies. In this blog, we explain why these findings are important to the global energy transition. … [Read more...]

How Cities Can Fight Climate Change Most Effectively

What are the best ways for U.S. cities to combat climate change? A new study co-authored by an MIT professor indicates it will be easier for cities to reduce emissions coming from residential energy use rather than from local transportation — and this reduction will happen mostly thanks to better building practices, not greater housing density. … [Read more...]

Nation’s Largest City-Owned Utility Uses Equity Metrics to Ensure All Residents Have Clean Energy

This week, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the largest municipal utility in the country, released the Equity Metrics Data Initiative (EMDI) “to track, measure, and report on how its programs are provided to all customers and residents of Los Angeles.” This data will help ensure the utility’s investments and programs are reaching all Angelenos. EMDI is the LADWP’s first effort to use data in the pursuit of equity in … [Read more...]

District of Columbia Raises Renewable Portfolio Standard Target to 50% by 2032

The District of Columbia (DC) increased and extended its renewable portfolio standard (RPS) target from 20% by 2020 to 50% by 2032. The target includes a separate solar-specific target of 5% by 2032, an increase and extension from 2.5% by 2023. Market Makers: Climate Change and Emissions Trading Programs

Climate change is a global problem — but its solution relies on national, regional, and local policy actions. Take the issue of greenhouse gas emissions markets, which put a price on, say, the amount of carbon a country can release into the atmosphere. There are about 45 substantial climate-focused markets around the world, including some operating within parts of a single country, such as California’s cap-and-trade program. But 195 countries … [Read more...]
