In yet another Earth Day unveiling, FedEx raised the curtain on its new 12,400-panel-strong solar array on the rooftop of its facility in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The system is to date the largest rooftop solar electric system in the country, and is helping New Jersey retain its second-place spot behind California in solar energy production.

The FedEx system covers 3.3 acres of rooftop and will produce about 2.6 million kilowatt-hours of solar electricity, according to MyCentralJersey.com. That’s enough to handle about 30 percent of power consumption for the 340,00-square-foot facility. The panels were installed by BP Solar, a leading solar manufacturer and installer, as well as subsidiary of the better-known multinational oil giant.
The Mayor of Woodbridge, the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey and FedEx executives were on-hand for the unveiling. “We’re proud to be the host town of the largest solar panel complex in the country. Our town is a leader among municipalities and our companies are leaders, too,” said Mayor John E. McCormac.
The town of Woodbridge already has some solar power going for it. Last year the city installed solar arrays on three separate municipal buildings and a firehouse rooftop. Those installations cost about about $5 million, with the state of New Jersey picking up $2.3 million through solar rebates. These installations are evidence of how effective New Jersey’s renewable energy credit trading scheme is. Woodbridge expects to not only save $140,000 per year on energy costs, but also make up to $530,000 annually by selling energy credits on the commodities market.
