Cape Wind officials praised Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey for his letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar sent earlier this week, calling for him to move quickly to issue the final federal permit for Cape Wind before the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
Congressman Markey, who is Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, wrote in his letter to Secretary Salazar, “Now that the project has passed its environmental review successfully and the Department is currently undertaking its final consultations with key stakeholders, I believe the time has come to move forward with the Cape Wind project so that we can unleash the promise of this and other offshore renewable projects.”
Cape Wind President Jim Gordon praised Congressman Markey’s efforts. Said Gordon, “We are very grateful to Congressman Ed Markey for his vision and leadership; he recognizes the enormous potential of offshore clean energy projects like Cape Wind to help the United States mitigate climate change, create jobs and become more energy independent.”
Cape Wind has the strong support of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and a majority of the members of the Massachusetts State House including twenty five Committee Chairmen, as well as several members of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation. In addition to strong support from legislators at various levels, eighty-six percent of Massachusetts residents also support Cape Wind.
