Originally aired February 18th, 2010

The Energy Collective was pleased to host Stewart Brand, author of Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto. Stewart Brand is a long-time environmentalist Stewart Brand who created the 1960s and 1970s classic Whole Earth Catalog, believes that big cities, nuclear power and biotechnology are all green.

The conversation ranged for geoengineering to genetically modified crops to the viability of energy solutions like nuclear, "clean coal," and solar power. A few of the audience-submitted questions were:

"What about the issue of water and nuclear? By that I mean that nuclear uses tremendous amounts of water - which is an issue in the West for instance?  is this too much of a strain on this natural resource?"

Listen Now: Audio From Our Climate Legislation in the U.S. Senate Presentation

Original broadcast: September 30th, 2009

Key U.S. CEOs and world leaders are urging the Obama Administration not to go empty-handed to the UNFCCC Conference in Copenhagen this December. All eyes are on the president, who will address the UN on climate change in New York on September 22 while the Senate considers climate legislation back in DC. But with the President’s focus on passing health care legislation, the climate bill awaiting action in the Senate risks being “back-burnered.”

Todd Stern, the U.S. State Department lead negotiator, has urged Congress to act. How critical is it that the U.S. climate negotiators have a bill this year? Would a strong bilateral China-U.S. agreement before December be sufficient instead? In the Senate, what type of climate and energy bill has the greatest likelihood of passage, and how will it differ from the House version? Do you agree with TEC blogger Joe Romm of climateprogress.org that there could be a "better" climate bill next year?

What Will ACES (Waxman-Markey) Achieve?

The U.S. House of Representatives voted on June 26, 2009 to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act, commonly known as the Waxman-Markey Bill. While, as of this posting, it has yet to pass the Senate, the bill promises an unprecedented and sweeping package of climate legislation, the full ramifications of which are yet to be determined.

But will the bill actually accomplish all of its purported goals? And how? What effects, short and long-term, will the bill actually have on the U.S. economy and the current path of climate change?

The Energy Collective conducted a live, interactive webcast in which energy experts and TEC blogger board members Jesse Jenkins of the Breakthrough Institute and John C. Whitehead of Appalachian State University dug into the bill and provided insight into its likely effectiveness in a number of key areas.

Decarbonization and Nuclear Power

Originally aired November 13, 2008, 11 a.m. Eastern / 8 a.m. Pacific

No topic in energy is more controversial than nuclear power. It seems to promise overwhelming benefits even as it faces insurmountable obstacles. Unlike any other method of energy generation, it is zero-carbon, base-load, and potentially unlimited. Yet cost and political considerations may prevent nuclear from gaining momentum.

Featuring Dan Yurman of Fuel Cycle Week, Ashton Poole, a Managing Director in Morgan Stanley's Global Power and Utility Group, and Jerry Paul, Expert Advisor to CASEnergy and CEO of Capitol Energy.
